I have seen a lot of homemade laundry detergents on Pinterest and have been wanting to make my own for a couple of months. From what I have heard it will save you money and is better for the environment? So when I ran out of laundry detergent three weeks ago I decided to go for it.
I used:
3 bars of Fels-Naptha
1 large box super washing soda
1 large box baking soda
1 large box borax
I found all my supplies at Walmart on the laundry aisle across from the detergents. My picture shows small boxes of baking soda. The large box is 4 lbs and I forgot to buy it, so I ended up going to Dollar General and getting four small boxes of the baking soda.
The total cost was around $25.00 for the above ingredients. I spent a little more then that to get a grater to use for the soap and a container.
I read that this much detergent will last you a year but with six people in my family I know it will not last me that long. I plan on keeping a record and posting about how long it lasts when I am out. Hopefully I wont have to post about that for a while.
I put a trash bag in my container to help me mix my ingredients but if you have a large enough container like I did, you could probably just mix it without the trash bag.
I grated a bar of Fels-Naptha soap and then layered one of the powdered boxes on then a bar of soap then a box of powdered ingredient and so on. The picture above is the Fels-Naptha grated, it looks like grated cheese. Each time I added a layer I mixed it. Since I put it in the trash bag I was able to mix it all together by moving the bag around when I was done. Then I poured it into my container.
I use 1 tablespoon for small loads
2 tablespoons for medium loads
3 tablespoons for large loads
Hi! Do you find this laundry detergent works well? I currently use an all natural brand, but have been wanting to make my own too! I'd love to hear your opinions and whether you find it cleans/deodarizes pretty well! Just became your newest GFC follower - would love if you would stop by and follow back! Look forward to seeing more of your posts! Our blogs are similiar :) Take care! ... Jessie
ReplyDeleteIt has been working well for me, I have a lot of iron in my water so I think I might add some Oxy to my washes that have whites in them. It is pretty much fragrance free, even though when you mix it, it has a strong clean odor. My clothes do not come out smelling all fresh like with bought detergents and their nice smells. But they do not smell dirty at all. The more powder you put in the better it works and even smells. The first time I did laundry with it, I literally smelled every item of clothing to see if I could find any rank smells that it didnt take away (I mean EVERY piece of clothing) haha. I was told to use 2 tablespoons per load but I use 3. Also as with any detergent its best to let it fill up at least half way before adding the clothes. I hope this helps and I plan on visiting your site and following.
